You, ma’am are on my ‘list’ and not in a good way…

Earlier this week I was (let’s put it gently) confronted, by a woman who told me that all Republicans oppose all women’s rights. I was shocked to learn this given our historical support of the 19th amendment among other things. Imagine my surprise, being a woman myself that all this time I had been secretly hating myself!!? Who knew? It turns out there was only one ‘right’ she was referring to, and as you may have guessed, it was the right to an abortion.

Today I was reading a Roll Call article re: ‘Emily’s List’ (in case you don’t know EMILY’s List is a campaign organization devoted to electing Democratic women who favor abortion rights.) In reference to the group’s adding women to their ‘list’¬†EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement, “the entire EMILY’s List community is proud to support them as they stand up to the Republican’s war on women.” Seriously? Again, here was another liberal (that makes two this week) woman telling me how I must hate myself to be a member of the GOP and have the audacity to be female…

Ladies, when are we going to realize that, as women, we have more in common than we think? When are we going to realize that Rep or Dem, we all worry about our families and how we are going to make it through these tough financial times. Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus on the issues that unite us rather than focusing on the single most divisive issue as the ONLY issue women are supposed to care about? I do care about life of course, and this comment is not to make light of the seriousness of the abortion issue, I am just so sick and tired of being told that one, single issue is ‘our’ (women’s) issue. I’ve got news for you, no woman is that simple, we are far more wonderful, complex creatures.

I for one, am concerned about the deficit, about the lack of jobs in my community, the lack of economic growth, the threat of increased taxes, how to be a good mother and a good employee, and about what the future will hold for my son. I bet there are a lot of other women out there who are concerned about those same things, and I would bet that if we allowed ourselves to realize our shared struggles, we could find that we have a great deal in common…
